The reason why this blog is so aptly named Paintings, Flowers and Furniture is because to me, these are the three key elements of any living room. Not just a well decorated and comfortable one. ANY living room comprises of these three elements. To have a living room means a selection of furniture, one painting or two and maybe if you're going to go the extra mile, a vase of beautiful flowers somewhere in the corner. It is the bread and butter of interior decorating, space-making and I'd say home-making too.
As I become more private and reclusive in age, spaces have taken on a new significance. Home never meant much to me when I was younger. I remember I wanted to live in a hotel, jet setting all over the globe with no place to my name. And even though a part of that is true for me still, I know what it means to have a space to call my own now. In old(er) age, the only place we want to be on Friday night is increasingly at home.
I have always enjoyed going to a friends house for a party or dinner more than going out. It's for the reason of intimacy and close range observational opportunities. Their homes are a peek inside their personalities, their values and their taste - something I am very interested in be it good or bad or just plain strange. All taste is something I want to look at. I am a big observer of taste.
Decorating ones space with Art, Flowers and unique furniture shouldn't be a practice that is reserved only for the artistically and aesthetically minded. It is an opportunity to create comfort and sanctuary in our own lives. Buying one print or painting, a bunch of sunflowers or a new armchair be it bespoke upholstered or from the local second hand, can make so much difference to how you relate to your home.
