I love the sense of community that this photo brings. I've learnt on an even deeper level recently that business and ventures are always about relationships and the better the relationships, the better the brand and Habitat gives off such a warm, inviting vibe |
It's amazing where a simple scroll through Pinterest can take you ( by the way, have you seen P.F.F's?
https://www.pinterest.com.au/paintingsflowersfurniture/ ... it's there for all your procrastination needs! I also update the P.F.F tumblr religiously
http://paintingsflowersfurniture.tumblr.com/) Just a couple of days ago, this magazine cover got my neurons firing :
You know that feeling when you find something and you get kind of scared because a part of you has already gotten their hopes up but you don't want it to be a disappointment? That was totally like this. I wanted this to be an amazing thing and I wasn't disappointed at all, because it's incredible. From this magazine cover came google searches, google images and finally follows on all the social media. I am well and truly so glad to have stumbled upon Habitat!
Habitat is a Furniture and homewares company which started by Sir Terence Conran and Phillip Pollock in the U.K on the 11th of May 1964. Like all the greats, they started off as a small, burgeoning business which then accumulated in recognition and success to branch off into wider avenues of distribution. Their catalogues is what, in my opinion, really capture their voice and branding :

I'm such a sucker for 70's things. I like the earthy, grainy look of the photos and I love the shapes and the silhouettes ( not to mention the patterns ) which dominate that era too. |
I wonder if they still do catalogue mail outs and if they would post to Australia? Most likely not, but if they did, I would sign up straight away. I visited their website today and of course, things have changed with the times. But what I liked about their homewares and furniture was that it had a warmth to the shapes designs and colour. They were stylish but not cold like a lot of stylish homewares and furniture are.
The designs feel friendly. Maybe it's got to do with their use of colour and pattern in their soft furnishings section or the sight child like hint in some of their furniture, but the friendliness is what draws me in and leaving me with a great impression.

I like the legs of this armchair |
|
The un-conventionality of this piece is what I like best. You get a light as well as a stand to put your things on! |
|
Texture creates drama ( and you all know how much I love that in a room ) and something to look at for the eyes. This fat, woven cushion would be a smart layering piece for any sofa or arm chair |
|
Is it just me or is velvet coming in? Sketch London would have a lot to do with this trend of velvet couches ( especially pink ones as that is really the novel attraction of their restaurant ) |
|
Lovely bowls and plates with an eye catching orange trim |
|
I love the intense colour contrasting on this rug. No neutrals here! ✊ ✊ ✊ |
|
I was saying that some of their designs capture a playful and childlike quality and this bed frame exemplifies what I mean quite well |
|
When I saw this table, the end image of all the things that I'd put on there sprang to my mind. Candles, flowers, beautiful bottles of expensive skincare, coloured trays and little trinkets. The glass would just make all these things pop |

I really think these European vibe mid century modern lighting with globby shapes in silver and gold are my jam for real |
I love all kinds of design : Modern, Old, Vintage etc. But friendly designs which feel inviting to use and enjoy really can't be beaten. Sometimes certain designs can feel cold and stand-offish. Perhaps those designs were not made to be used per se but rather enjoyed for their craftsmanship and beauty. But as weird as this sounds, we DO develop connections to items and furnishings in our home and the ones which we don't use just don't make it into our circle of love 😆. But it's the useable items which are also stylish which we appreciate so much more.
